Higher Horizons+ is a government-funded organisation that works with schools in areas with the lowest rates of university progression in order to support learners into higher education through university visits and experiences.
WHAT IS MY ROLE?
I deliver interactive and engaging sessions periodically to groups of students, ranging from KS3 to GCSE level, in ways that raise the aspirations of young people and assist them in exploring their options upon completing compulsory education.
WHY DID I GET INVOLVED?
I was inspired to get involved in outreach, in part, due to my own experiences as a first-generation university student. It was through similar Aimhigher interventions and initiatives throughout my schooling that I went on to complete several degrees, culminating in my current studies at doctoral level.
HOW DO I DELIVER SESSIONS?
The sessions are usually around 50 minutes long with groups of up to 30 students. I have designed and delivered sessions on a range of topics, from gender and race in Shakespeare's plays to alienation and mental health in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's Frankenstein.
Students are encouraged to engage with these texts and themes through a variety of creative means. For example, in a session on The Merchant of Venice, I tasked students to create and then 'pitch' their own movie adaptation of the play. In another session I introduced students to erasure poetry, before encouraging them to engage with key themes in Frankenstein by creating erasure poems from extracts of the text. These sessions have proven popular among students at various levels of study, as well as their teachers, resulting in consistently positive feedback, requests to re-run sessions, and an invitation to undergo teacher training with a local secondary school.
AM I AVAILABLE TO RUN THESE SESSIONS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS?
Yes! I find these sessions incredibly fun and fulfilling and would be keen to run similar sessions in schools and colleges within the Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent area. I have a broad knowledge base and experience in the study and teaching of English Literature, meaning I am able to tailor sessions to specific age groups and school curricula.
Please get in touch here if you are interested in booking me for a session.
